There’s no news on whether the AirPods themselves will be upgraded or just the charging case.
Apple sent out invites to its iPhone 15 announcement event last night, which will take place on September 12th. At least four new iPhones are expected, including the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max (Ultra). Apple may also introduce other goods at the ‘Wonderlust’ event, including the updated AirPods.
New AirPods will be unveiled at the iPhone 15 announcement event.
Apple is rumored to be planning a September 12th event to unveil updated AirPods with a USB-C charging case. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (via MacRumors), these AirPods with the USB-C charging case will be released to coincide with the new iPhones. For those who are unaware, the iPhone 15 series is rumored to include USB-C connections as Apple eventually abandons the Lightning port.
The report doesn’t say anything else about the updated AirPods’ functionality or any other improvements. It’s also unclear whether Apple intends to upgrade AirPods or AirPods Pro. The second-generation AirPods Pro debuted alongside the iPhone 14 series in September 2022, and the AirPods 3 debuted in October 2021. As a result, both models are due for an upgrade.
AirPods Pro include a USB-C charging port.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of AirPods with USB-C charging ports. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted earlier this year that Apple would debut the AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C later this year. This was also discovered in the iOS 16.4 developer beta. Kuo cites AirPods Pro 2, implying that Apple may merely enhance the charging case while keeping the rest of the functionality the same.
Kuo also stated that the AirPods 2 and 3 are unlikely to receive a USB-C version. This implies that only the ‘Pro’ model will get USB-C during the iPhone 15 launch event. All of information leads to the charging case being updated but no further updates for the AirPods Pro. But we’ll have to wait till the official release to find out what Apple has in store.
