The Mahindra Thar.e is a substantially bolder and more contemporary off-roader.
The Mahindra Thar EV, formally known as the Thar.e, had its global concept debut during the carmaker’s Independence Day 2023 event in South Africa. Importantly, it debuts as a five-door model, giving us our first look at the ICE version, which is set to appear on sale early next year.
The Thar.e retains the present three-door Thar’s boxy SUV form, but with various new visual aspects as a future product. The closed grille features lit “Thar.e” letters and is flanked by squared parts. It even features some illuminated bars to pay homage to the original Thar’s slatted design.
The massive bumpers, bulging wheel arch claddings, and big off-road capable wheels match the block-like dimensions.
The Thar EV will be available in a five-door model with a wheelbase ranging from 2,775mm to 2,975mm. It will be supported by a redesigned INGLO P1 platform, which will also boost the Thar.e’s wheelbase by 325mm over the three-door ICE version.
The Thar EV’s cabin is substantially different from the present Thar. The dashboard is upright and features a rectangular-shaped completely digital driver’s display and a two-spoke steering wheel.
The large console in the center houses the gear lever, low-range gearbox, and drive modes. As part of the ergonomic design of the cabin, the huge touchscreen infotainment system is oriented toward the driver.
It should come with a large battery pack with a range of more than 400 kilometers. A dual electric motor configuration is anticipated, and 4WD with terrain-specific driving modes may be standard.
While this is only a concept version, we may see it in a production-ready version by 2026. It is estimated to cost more than Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).
